Understanding Golf Each-Way Bets & Dead Heats

Each-way betting is extremely popular in golf due to the large fields (typically 120-156 players) and long odds on any single player to win. An each-way bet gives you two chances to win: the outright victory and a place finish.

How Each-Way Works

When you place a $100 each-way bet, you're actually placing two $50 bets:

  • Win part ($50): Pays if your golfer wins the tournament at full odds
  • Place part ($50): Pays if your golfer finishes in the top X at a fraction of the win odds

Dead Heat Rules Explained

Golf tournaments frequently have ties, especially for place positions. When players tie, dead heat rules apply:

  • Your payout is divided by the number of players tied for that position
  • Example: 3 players tie for 5th place in a Top 5 market → your payout is divided by 3
  • This applies to both win and place portions if applicable

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an each-way bet in golf?

An each-way bet is two bets in one: a bet to win and a bet to place (finish in a certain position). Your stake is doubled - half goes on the win, half on the place at reduced odds (typically 1/4 or 1/5 of win odds).

How do dead heat rules work?

When multiple players finish in the same position (tie), dead heat rules apply. Your payout is divided by the number of players tied. For example, if 3 players tie for 5th and you bet on one, your payout is divided by 3.

What does 'Top 5 at 1/4 odds' mean?

This means the place part of your each-way bet pays out if your golfer finishes in the top 5, at 1/4 of the win odds. So if win odds are +2400, place odds would be +600.
