Understanding MLB Sabermetrics for Betting

wOBA (Weighted On-Base Average) is the gold standard for measuring offensive production. Unlike traditional stats, wOBA weights each offensive event by its actual run value. A .370+ wOBA is elite, while .320 is league average.

FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching) measures what a pitcher's ERA should be based only on strikeouts, walks, and home runs - outcomes the pitcher controls. FIP is more predictive of future performance than ERA, making it invaluable for betting.

xFIP takes FIP further by normalizing home runs to league average rates, helping identify pitchers who have been lucky or unlucky on fly balls. Large ERA-FIP or FIP-xFIP gaps suggest regression candidates.

Betting Application: Compare a team's wRC+ to the opposing pitcher's FIP to identify scoring potential. Teams with high wOBA facing high-FIP pitchers often present value on overs.

Responsible Gambling

Gambling should be entertaining, not a way to make money. Only bet what you can afford to lose, and never chase your losses.

Signs of problem gambling:
  • Betting more than you can afford to lose
  • Chasing losses with bigger bets
  • Lying to others about gambling habits
