What is Elo Rating?

The Elo rating system is a method for calculating the relative skill levels of teams in competitive matchups. Originally developed for chess, it's now widely used in sports betting to create power ratings and predict game outcomes.

How Elo Ratings Work

  • Base Rating: Teams start at 1500 (average). Elite teams range from 1700-1900+, while poor teams fall below 1300.
  • Home Advantage: Typically worth 25-75 Elo points depending on the sport. NBA/NFL is around 60 points, soccer around 100 points.
  • Win Probability: Calculated using the formula: Expected = 1 / (1 + 10^((OpponentElo - YourElo) / 400))
  • K-Factor: Controls how quickly ratings change. Higher K means more volatile updates (typical: 20-40).
  • Rating Updates: Winners gain points, losers lose points. The amount depends on the probability of the outcome.

Using Elo for Betting

Professional bettors use Elo ratings to generate their own win probabilities and point spreads. Compare your Elo-based probability to the implied probability from sportsbook odds to find value bets. A 100-point Elo difference typically translates to about a 4-point spread advantage in football or basketball.
