What is Reverse Line Movement?

Reverse Line Movement (RLM) occurs when the betting line moves in the opposite direction of where the majority of bets are being placed. This is often considered a strong indicator of "sharp" or professional betting action.

How It Works

Sportsbooks move lines based on money (handle), not the number of bets. If 75% of bets are on Team A, but the line moves toward Team B, it means the 25% of bets on Team B represent MORE money – typically from sharp bettors wagering larger amounts.

Why It Matters

Sharp bettors have a proven edge over time. When RLM indicates sharp money on one side, it suggests the "smart money" believes that side has value. Following RLM isn't a guarantee, but it's one tool in a bettor's arsenal.

Sharp vs Public Money Explained

Public/Recreational Bettors

  • • Bet smaller amounts ($20-$500)
  • • Often bet favorites and overs
  • • Influenced by media narratives
  • • Higher volume, lower individual impact

Sharp/Professional Bettors

  • • Bet larger amounts ($5,000-$100,000+)
  • • Bet based on value, not bias
  • • Use data and models
  • • Lower volume, higher individual impact

When these two groups bet on opposite sides, the line will typically move toward the sharp side despite fewer bets, creating Reverse Line Movement.

Responsible Gambling

Gambling should be entertaining, not a way to make money. Only bet what you can afford to lose, and never chase your losses.

Signs of problem gambling:
  • Betting more than you can afford to lose
  • Chasing losses with bigger bets
  • Lying to others about gambling habits
