How World Cup Group Stages Work

Each group contains four teams who play a single round-robin, meaning every team plays the other three once. A win is worth 3 points, a draw 1 point, and a loss 0. After all six matches, the top two teams advance to the knockout stage. This calculator builds the table in real time as you enter scores.

Tiebreakers Explained

  • Points: The primary ranking metric across all three group matches
  • Goal difference: Goals scored minus goals conceded breaks level points
  • Goals scored: The next tiebreaker when goal difference is equal
  • Head-to-head: FIFA then uses results between the tied teams and fair-play points

Frequently Asked Questions

How are World Cup group ties broken?

FIFA breaks ties first on total points, then goal difference, then goals scored across all group matches. If still level, head-to-head results and fair-play points are used. This calculator applies points, goal difference, and goals scored.

How many teams advance from each group?

In the standard 32-team format, the top two teams from each of the eight groups advance to the round of 16. The expanded 48-team format for 2026 also advances the top two from each group plus the best third-placed teams.

How many points usually guarantee advancement?

Historically, 6 points (two wins) almost always advances a team, and 4 points is usually enough. Three points can advance on goal difference in a tight group.
