Understanding Track Takeout
Track takeout is the percentage the racetrack removes from the betting pool before paying winners. Unlike sports betting where the house edge is built into odds, racing takeout is explicit. The remaining pool is divided among winning ticket holders.
Typical Takeout Rates
- Win/Place/Show: 15-17% (lowest takeout)
- Exacta/Quinella: 18-22%
- Trifecta/Superfecta: 22-26%
- Pick 4/5/6: 22-28% (highest takeout, but often have carryovers)
