Frequently Asked Questions
How does profit work on Kalshi?
Every Kalshi contract pays exactly $1.00 if your side is correct and $0 if it's wrong. Your profit is $1 minus what you paid, minus fees. Buying 100 Yes contracts at 40 cents costs $40 plus about $1.68 in fees; if Yes settles, you receive $100 for a profit of roughly $58.32.
How much can I make on a 10-cent Kalshi contract?
A 10-cent contract returns $1.00 if correct - a 900% gross return. Buying 100 contracts costs $10 plus $0.63 in fees; if it hits, you collect $100 for about $89.37 profit. The market is telling you it only happens about 10% of the time, though.
What happens if I sell my Kalshi contract before it settles?
You receive the current market price times your contracts, minus a second trading fee. Your profit is the sale proceeds minus your total purchase cost. Many traders lock in gains this way instead of waiting for settlement.
Is Kalshi profit calculated per contract or per order?
Per contract, but fees are computed on the whole order and rounded up to the next cent. Each contract pays $1 if correct, so a 100-contract position at 55 cents has a maximum payout of $100 regardless of when you bought.
Do I pay taxes on Kalshi profits?
Kalshi profits are taxable income in the US. Kalshi issues a 1099 form for the year's net gains. Event contract taxation can differ from gambling winnings - consult a tax professional for your situation.
